Über 100 m über der Mosel befindet sich das spätgotische Bauwerk, welches etwa um das Jahr 1000 unter Pfalzgraf Ezzo, Sohn und Nachfolger von Pfalzgraf Hermann Pusillius errichtet wurde. 1051 wurde die Burg erstmals urkundlich erwähnt.
Seit 1978 ist sie im Besitz der Stadt Cochem und ein sehr beliebtes Ausflugsziel.
